20 Ways to Help Improve Your Immune System and NOT Get Sick!

Keeping your immune system strong is a must to fight off getting sick every winter. A strong immune system involves eating right and getting plenty of rest. I pray every night for my family's health and to keep our immune systems up. Of course, over the years our family has had an occasional cold and the flu, and so along the way, I have learned what can help us not get sick! Bacteria, viruses, and parasites are all around us. So, what can we do to protect ourselves? Here are some ways that might reduce your chance of getting sick, some are bad habits that a lot of people do every day and how to change them:

1. Don't wear outdoor shoes inside your home.
Everything you can think of that is on the ground outside is now in your house... bird poop, dog poop, engine oil, chemicals, gum, and so on.
Solution: Take your shoes off before you enter your home then place them on a shoe tray. Wash Your Hands after taking your shoes off. I always wash my hands when I get home from anywhere!

2. You place your purse, backpack, briefcase, coat, or anything on the ground… in restaurants, on planes, and in other public spaces.
The reasoning is the same as wearing shoes inside your home.
Solution: I personally never put my purse on the floor or anything else. My lap is where my purse always goes.

3. You pump gas… then carry on with your day
You have no idea who last touched that handle. In six major U.S. cities, 71 percent of gas-pump handles sampled the highest levels of contamination.
Solution: Have disinfecting wipes ready in your car before you pump your gas, so you don't contaminate the container your wipes are in.

4. You bite your nails.
If you put bite your nails, and your hands or nails aren’t clean, you’re putting germs into your body!
Solution: Tried to stop and if you can’t, make sure your hands are clean, with proper hand-washing. Use a nail brush and clean under your nails, and wash your hands again and again!

5. Your dog or cat licks your face
A pet's tongue is not clean, due to the fact of how they use it to clean after going potty.
Solution: I know it might be hard because they are so adorable, but if you can, keep your face away from your pet. Also, wash your hands after petting them.

6. You never clean your cell phone.
Your phone is possibly the dirtiest item you own. That’s because phones are constantly in dirty hands and on dirty surfaces.
Solution: Wipe your phone's face with vinegar, and clean the rest of your phone with alcohol. All with a damp cloth.

7. Eat Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and veggies are loaded with vitamins and minerals that boost your body’s natural immunity. Try to fill half of your plate with live food... fruits and vegetables

8. Eat Probiotics
Probiotics in foods and supplements give your immune system a boost, which helps ward off and fight colds. Food such as yogurt, pickles, fermented fruits and vegetables, and sauerkraut.

9. Take Vitamin C Supplements
Vitamin C enhances your immune system, but you may not be ingesting large enough doses of vitamin C from foods alone, so taking a supplement of vitamin C may help.

10. Get Plenty of Rest
If you have a cold, getting plenty of rest is one of the best ways to fight it and reduce its severity. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to maximize health, but if you’re sick you might require additional sleep to recover from a cold or the flu quickly and prevent possible complications.

11. Drink Lots of Water
When you’re sick with a cold or the flu, dehydration is a concern. Drinking lots of water, clear broths, clear juices, or warm water with lemon helps prevent dehydration and loosen congestion. Aim for a minimum of 12 cups of fluid daily for women and 16 cups per day for men to ensure proper hydration and reduce the duration of sicknesses.

12. Ingest Selenium
Selenium is an antioxidant that’s important for keeping your immune system strong. Foods rich in selenium include Brazil nuts, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, wheat products, oatmeal, and brown rice. . Fruits and vegetables don’t have much selenium so taking selenium supplements can help you meet daily selenium needs to fight colds naturally.

13. Get Lots of Vitamin D
Believe it or not, vitamin D plays a crucial role in strong immune health. Many reports that people with vitamin D deficiency are more likely to get colds, other respiratory infections, and the flu. Vitamin D comes from sunshine and unfortunately, many Americans aren’t getting enough vitamin D from sunshine alone. That’s why vitamin D supplements are helpful especially during the winter months.

14. Use Garlic
Raw garlic consumption is helpful to boost your immune system. Its cloves can be helpful to fight off the common cold.

15. Avoid Processed Foods
Added sugar, gluten, and processed foods should be avoided because all of these can decrease the immune functions greatly. Many processed foods can provide nutrients and energy, but ultimately it leads to negative implications overall.

16. Avoid Tobacco Smoke
Smoking increases the risk of pneumonia and bronchitis as well as your vulnerability to lung function.

17. Drink Less Alcohol
Alcohol’s excessive consumption may increase the risk of lung infection and can weaken your immune system.

18. Manage Stress
Stress can change your mood and drains the body and mind. Opening yourself to stress also can open up your body to getting sick.

19. Regular Exercise
Regular exercise is great for your body. If you can’t do heavy exercise, even walking for around 30 minutes can make a difference to your immune system.

20. Pray
Prayer is always the answer to everything! Asking God to protect and reading His word is a great way to build your mental mind while getting closer to God as well! That is a win-win for me!

God designed our bodies to fight off sickness and disease naturally, without the need for medications. Keep your immune system strong with supplements, a nutritious diet, plenty of sleep, regular exercise, reduced stress, and an overall healthy lifestyle.
